This week I lost a dear, old friend and its painful to think I won't get to see him or hear him laugh again. When I was a few years younger and living in a strange new country, he gave me a job introduced me to friends I'd keep for a lifetime and even looked out for girlfriend who eventually became my wife. We all simply knew him as "Pappa-san" but most of us treated him more like an uncle or even a father for some.
Most of the people reading this entry won't even know him but if you're a member of this site, know that he was one of its earliest influences. An old, rowdy Japanese bar owner. Always with a glass of tea and a wide smile, Pappa was always encouraging us to throw parties in his place. His Club U$ is famous (or infamous) for being a stomping ground for freestyle rap and a place where local DJs could get behind the table and mix for a quick session. It was also where the original members of the DBC including myself would meet and plot the next club to shut down.
Pappa trusted us like few others did. I was one of two Americans I know with a key to that bar and I often had to turn down offers for him to hook me up with his "daughters" even now I laugh at how many times he would ask me "Where's your wife?" when I walk into the club, knowing that's about as much of an English sentence as he could put together at the time but it was enough to say "I'm looking out for you both." So, when I look up in the clouds now, I'll be looking out for you Pappa-san. I know you've got you tea, your smile, and a DJ mixing T.R.O.Y. just for you. God bless you brother, may you rest in peace.
We will surely miss you down here.
